MTC National Round 1 EARCC
Round 1 of the MTC Nationals was held on the 9th of August at EARCC in Norwich. The clubs venue is in Easton College in the very big sports hall.
We were greeted with a well prepared track with a great layout and a carpeted pitting area which had ample room for the racers.
This year there are 3 classes with the MTC Rubber and Foam classes being the main ones, but also each round has a support class so that those yet to enjoy MTC can still join in the fun on the day.

Foam Class
Qualifying was a two way battle between Dave Rand and Mark Barford to take the P1 for the finals. Dave took FTQ by just over a second from Mark with Michael Chapman rounding out the top 3.
Leg 1. Saw a coming together at the start which saw Mark Young move up from P4 who then chased Dave down, but as hard as he tried Dave was pulling a gap every lap to take the win from Mark. Meanwhile there was a great battle for 3rd place going on to the finish line with Michael Chapman taking the place 1 second clear of Mark Barford.
Leg 2. Was full of excitement from start to finish with the top 4 cars trading places. The battle at the front was eventually won by Dave Rand with Mark Barford 1 second behind as they crossed the finish line. Michael Chapman took 3rd in this leg followed by Mark Young.
Dave Rand took a well deserved first A Final win with his RRP 3 Racing M4 Pro. The next 3 were all joint on points and on count back Mark Barford took 2nd place with his modified 3 Racing M4 Sport and Mark Young 3rd place with his 3 Racing M4 Pro, also taking the fastest lap of the day. This made it a 3 Racing podium lockout. A brilliant end to a great days racing.

2nd Mark Barford, 1st Dave Rand, 3rd Mark Young.
Rubber Class
Stu Rand was in a league of his own in qualifying. Stu was using a RRP mid motor Xray conversion to full effect by taking FTQ by well over a lap of the rest of the field. Mark Young using his 3 Racing M4 Pro took P2 with Michael Chapman rounding out the top 3 with his M4 Pro.
Leg 1. With a flying start Stu Rand lead the field away with Mark Young chasing him down. With Stu's consistent pace he easily pulled away until lap 22. After clipping a corner he had to wait for a marshall at an awkward point on the track, so Mark moved into the lead, Stu chased him down but it was to little to late and Mark took the win from Stu and Jack Anderson just made the line before Michael Chapman.
Leg 2. Another great launch off the start line for Stu and he never looked back this time. He had to win this leg of the finals to secure the overall win, which he did in fine style with his RRP Xray taking the win by 1 lap and with overall victory. Mark had another solid run to 2nd place 3 seconds clear of 3rd place Michael Chapman.
The overall finishing order after the countbacks were calculated were 1st place Stu Rand, 2nd Mark Young, 3rd Michael Chapman.

MTC National Round 2 SRCCC
After the success of Round 1 in Norwich two weeks earlier, we now moved to the South East of England to Rayleigh in Essex. SRCCC was the venue for Round 2 of the MTC Nationals. The Southend club is one of the oldest running in the area. Not only do they have weekly Tuesday night meetings at the same venue as the EWS meetings but they also have 2 outdoor tracks, both on and off road, so they have all bases covered.
We were in the smaller hall for this meeting which they use week nights, with an almost full entry. The track was laid the day before so the carpet was super flat and spotlessly hoovered. A tight chicane lead on to the straight then into the sweeper, two switch backs took you through the follow through to another switch back section, then back around to the chicane. Sub ten second laps being achieved by the top drivers in both classes and some not far off a sub nine second lap, so it was a technical but super fast layout.

Foam Class Qualifying and Finals.
Mark Barford was again the man on a mission and starting to be the man to beat. Dave Rand the Championship leader was not having it all his way this time out. Round four would see him pip Mark Young for P2 by just over half a second, bumping Mark to P3. But P1 went to Mark Barford with a succession of FTQ runs. This all shaped the finals up for some fantastic racing.
Leg 1, an unfortunate start for pole sitter Mark Barford who stripped a spur on the way to the start line, he did soilder on through the race to take a vital 4th place which may come into play through the Championship. Meanwhile up front we had a colossal battle for the lead with Dave Rand coming out in front of Mark Young, until the last lap. Disaster struck for Dave who clipped a back marker on the last corner, this handed the win to Mark Young, Dave recovered to take 2nd and Michael Chapman followed them both home to take 3rd.
Leg 2, after the excitement of leg 1 could it be bettered, yes. We had a train of cars for the first five or so laps, all looking to topple Mark Barford from the lead. It was great to see such clean and close racing. Coming off the sweeper Mark and Dave both meet at the corner which gave Mark Young the chance he needed and he took the lead. Mark Barford and Dave quickly set about chasing him down, but Dave pulled away from Mark and set about chasing the leader down. With a few seconds to go Dave had almost caught Mark Young, but it was to little to late as the buzzer sounded just before Mark crossed the line for another win with Dave on his bumper. The overall result was a win for Mark Young, 2nd Dave Rand and 3rd Michael Chapman.

Rubber Class Qualifying and Finals.
It would be a brave racer to bet against Stu Rand in the Rubber Class, but FTQ in round 1 went to Mark Young when Stu retired half way through the race. Business as usual was resumed for the following 3 rounds Stu extended his lead to take P1 for the finals, followed by Mark and Michael Chapman rounding out the top 3.
Leg 1, Stu stormed away from the start line at the sound of the buzzer to pull out a comfortable lead on the first lap. Meanwhile the battle was on for second between Mark Young and Michael Chapman. Both made errors but Michael one less so took 2nd from the hard charging Stu, with Mark picking up 3rd.
Leg 2, as the race started Mark was hot on the heels of Stu for the first lap but Stu started to extend his lead, half way through the final Mark clipped the apex of the sweeper firing him off the track which let Michael through to 2nd. Stu took a flag to flag win again and with it the overall win. Michael backed up his leg 1 result with another 2nd place taking step 2 on the podium and Mark made the best of the two bad runs to take 3rd overall.

Tamiya Support Class Qualifying and Finals.
With only 4 cars entered it was a great day for the support class racers to fine tune their cars. All four being SRCCC racers, I'm sure a more relaxed days racing tune wise was welcomed by them compared to their busy club nights.
Legs 1 and 2 of the finals for the Support Class were almost identical. Jamie Greenwood coming good in both finals to take two A Final wins from his P2 grid slot. Pole sitter David Ball had to settle for 2nd place in both finals taking 2nd overall. With one of the hardest working and nicest men in the R/C world Ray Cockman taking 3rd place on the podium.

Concourse De Elegance
Colin Webb was the lucky winner of the Concourse De Elegance trophy at Round 2. His cars body shell design stood out to the young judge Callum Gordon who picked this winning design.
Here is the line up that Colin's shell was chosen from.
Well that was an epic end to Round 2 of the Championship which makes it 2 rounds down and 2 to go. The Championship is really hotting up now and is very close in the Foam Class, with 4 possible contenders. Stu is romping away atm in the Rubber Class, but anything can happen at the last 2 rounds.
We will next be racing at what is now being called the MB Raceway weekender. Rounds 3 and 4 will be run over the weekend of 19th & 20th of September at the countries biggest and best permanent indoor carpet venue.
We will see the MTC Nationals Rubber and Foam Champions crowned here, a fitting end to the series, if a little shorter than expected at the beginning of the season.
